Motion design: A must for your brand in 2022

As technology evolves we are beginning to see the ubiquity and importance of motion design. What qualifies as motion design? What are the tricks of the trade? You’re in the right place if you want to learn all the industry secrets…

Motion design is a mix between animation and traditional graphic design. It consists of animating 2D and 3D graphic elements and text by incorporating movement and sound, creating a whole new type of visual communication.

Usually, a motion design is short - less than 2 minutes.

The goal is to firstly captivate the targeted audience and then send a message. It’s a really great way to stand out on social media!

Principles of motion design

Motion design theory was born in 1981, when Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, two lead animators for Disney published “Disney animation: The Illusion of Life”. The book included 12 principles, taken and updated by JR Canedo Estrada: “10 principles of motion design”, which are:

  1. Timing, Spacing, and Rhythm
  2. Eases
  3. Mass & Weight
  4. Anticipation
  5. Arcs
  6. Squash, Stretch & Smears
  7. Follow Through & Overlapping Action
  8. Exaggeration
  9. Secondary and Layered Animation
  10. Appeal

These 10 principles constitute the foundation of animation and allow a natural and realistic flow to the eye. It’s essential to keep these in mind when producing graphic animation.

There are several softwares you can use for motion design: Adobe Illustrator is used to create vectorial graphic elements, which can then be used on the animation software: Adobe After Effects, the most common.

These softwares can be quite technical, so take some time to learn the ins and outs before getting started. No time to master them? We suggest using templates that are made specifically for Adobe so you don’t have to start from scratch. They are available online for After Effects on websites like Sonduck films, Motion Array or Story Blocks.

If creation softwares aren’t your cup of tea you can also use the online platform Canva to add some animations to your designs, and make them stand out.

When we’re talking about motion design and other types of animation, it’s important to remember that there is a lot of overlap between these and sometimes it can be hard to tell them apart. But no matter which type of animated video you use, you’re on your way to more engaging content for your audience!
